A world of contrasts
Have you ever been to Africa? Have you ever seen how people in a development country live? Have you ever seen how the resources in a development country are distributed among the people?
I have. And I brought my camera. As a part of my degree at UMB I spent four months as an exchange student at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. What stroke me during my stay in Uganda was all the contrasts. The first impression was the big contrast between Uganda and my home country, Norway. Then I got to see the big contrast between the rich and the poor people in Uganda. I got to experience the contrast between the urban and the rural life. I saw how different the life of educated people and the ones with no or just some few years with education was. The last part of my stay I spent in Lake Mburo National Park, southwest in Uganda. There I experienced the big contrast between the land use in a conservation area compared with the land use in the rest of the country. Just some few days before I left Uganda I got to experience a big student riot. As soon as this riot ended Besigye, the opposition leader and presidential candidate for the elections in March 2006, got arrested. The incident caused a big riot in the whole of Kampala. This was a big contrast compared to the peaceful life I had experienced so far during my time in "The pearl of Africa".
Consequently - I will always remember Uganda as "A world of contrasts" - for good and for worse.
This experience is something I would very much like to share with others. I have therefore picked some of the 3 gigs with photos I brought home from Uganda and uploded them to this webpage.
